According to a January 19, 2021 Radio Dabanga article (Radio Dabanga is a Darfuri-run independent news organization), the attack has left at least 129 people dead, with that number expected to rise as more bodies are recovered from El Geneina, the Kerending camps and the surrounding areas (1). The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is also quickly evaluating the situation (2). One of our Directors has been in the area since early November and will be considering with our Board here in the US how best to proceed.
Misterei, close to El Geneina, was attacked on July 25, 2020, and the Kerending Camps were attacked in late December, 2019; both attacks displaced many thousands of people. In June 2020, DOHS distributed blankets and sleeping mats to over 750 people displaced by the last attack on the Kerending Camps. Earlier this month our Director in El Geneina was consulting with these displaced communities to find out the best things to buy for them.
Since our Board are from this area and we have done recent aid work here before, we hope to raise more money for work here, and have updated our project with Global Giving for this purpose. Donations may also be made on this website here (just go to the donate page). All donors, especially donors outside the United States, are encouraged to donate to us through our Global Giving Project (#44449) page:
