In North Darfur State alone, 87,502 people driven from their homes by fighting in Jebel Marra

Marta Ruedas, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, said in a statement today that there are 63,223 displaced persons in the area of Sortony, another 63,223 people in the Tawila area and 2,018 more in Kabkabiya, all displaced by the recent bombing, militia attacks and fighting in the Jebel Marra area to the south (1).  She went on to say that so far that UN and its partners have not been given access to places in Central Darfur State where there are reportedly very many people displaced by the conflict in need of aid (Sortony, Tawila and Kabkabiya are all in North Darfur, and all have UNAMID Team sites).  On Monday, she visited displaced persons in the Tawila area, and afterwards had this to say:  “Seeing hundreds of women and children in Tawila and speaking to the local authorities there very much brings it home: that civilians continue to bear the brunt of conflict every day and their protection is our paramount concern,” the statement reads.

Thank you, Mr. Suleiman! We are preparing to ask for cash donations in various cities in the US soon. We plan to give some of the money raised to US-based aid groups operating in Darfur. In the meantime we are working to help new arrivals to the US.
